23-year-old Feidin Santana was presented the House Resolution award by South Carolina State Representative, Wendell G. Gilliard, on Thursday, June 11th, 2015.  Santana is the bystander who captured the cellphone video of Walter Scott being slain by former North Charleston Police Officer, Michael Slager.

Since the release of the video, Slager has been fired from the North Charleston Police Department, jailed, and indicted for murder by a grand jury in Charleston County.  If convicted, Slager could face a sentence of 30 years to life in prison, without the possibility of parole.

Community leaders from Black Lives Matter Charleston, the International Longshoreman’s Association, and the National Action Network were also in attendance, to express thanks to Santana, for validating their work within the community.

“Ladies and Gentleman, we want you to know that this gentleman is now seen as a hero in the state of South Carolina,” Rep. Gilliard stated, while handing Santana the award.

Feidin Santana says he was late to work on April 4th, 2015, when he captured the tragic video of Walter Scott being gunned down.  Santana says he has not experienced any retaliation against him for capturing the video.

Santana is being credited with contributing to an orderly and prompt judicial processing of the Walter Scott incident.

“I’m very honored and glad to receive the house resolution,” Santana expressed, as he received his award.
